Yes it was kind of nice\u00a0curling up in front of\u00a0the snowman with a hot chocolate, and having a holiday without the\u00a0preparations we have to make for our own holidays, but to be honest I always felt a bit of an intruder at christmas. I mean it&#8217;s not really our chag is it? Did we really have a right to get into it? It always felt\u00a0a bit false &#8230; the whole &#8220;giving&#8221; theme was completely overtaken by SHOPPING, SHOPPING and more SHOPPING, and I always felt sorry for my non-jewish friends being under pressure to buy suitable christmas presents. As someone who\u00a0regards shopping as a tick-off task with the fun rating not far above cleaning toilets\u00a0(unless\u00a0I happen to have a voucher\u00a0for some free makeup) this was always my idea of hell. At least with our &#8220;giving&#8221; chag we are given specific instructions of how and what to give, so it never descends into dire consumerism. (It&#8217;s Purim by the way, shame on you!)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/mehmehs.com\/aliyah\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/IMG_6441.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-622 alignright lazyload\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 225px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 225\/300;border: black 5px solid;\" title=\"Me and Yaron\" data-src=\"http:\/\/mehmehs.com\/aliyah\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/IMG_6441-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"On a tiyul in the Hula Valley\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/mehmehs.com\/aliyah\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/IMG_6441-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/mehmehs.com\/aliyah\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/IMG_6441.jpg 600w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" \/><\/a>You do get the odd pang though, and watching the christmas ads on tv (we only watch foreign tv here) seeing the ads for\u00a0food, offers at Boots, films on telly and the lights&#8230;\u00a0I did wonder whether chanukah would be fun here. I\u00a0shouldn&#8217;t have been worried.\u00a0It is, after all,\u00a0the original festival of lights!\u00a0There are lots of parties, mostly geared around children, including a freebie at the matnas\u00a0and many local gatherings involve candle lighting even if the participants are not particularly religious.\u00a0It&#8217;s more of a national festival, so with all the lights and sweets\u00a0everywhere there is actually a sense of spirit even in a town like ours.\u00a0Ulpan closes for the week\u00a0so we went on 2 organised outings to various local sights (Tzfat one day and the Hula Valley the next) with weather that would have been\u00a0welcome in a British summer. Jojo had a lovely week. The doughnuts however, were dire. All hard, not the right sugar-coating and\u00a0nasty<span style=\"text-decoration: line-through;\"> <\/span>FLUORESCANT red filling (think that red sauce that used to come in a Marcuses takeaway and you will have the right idea) or worse no filling at all. The americans were disappointed too but being americans they have no idea what a decent wholsesome doughnut really tastes like. If Grodzinski&#8217;s sent a rep out here with that recipe,\u00a0they would make a killing.<\/p>\n<p>The only difference with being religiously mainstream\u00a0is it feels a bit wrong going to the supermarket <em>after <\/em>the chag and buying reduced cardboard dreidels with choccies in them &#8211; whereas in England\u00a0my mum\u00a0had no issue buying half price chocolate Santas in January.\u00a0So we left those for the <em>goyim.<\/em> A fair swap, I would say.<\/p>\n<p>There is, however one bit of christmas I will be practising.\u00a0 That will be the christmas pudding.\u00a0 This year the chag falls on\u00a0shabbat, and christmas pudding is one of the few desserts that actually<em>\u00a0improves<\/em> sitting on\u00a0a hotplate.
