{"id":391,"date":"2010-10-07T14:46:11","date_gmt":"2010-10-07T12:46:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mehmehs.com\/aliyah\/?p=391"},"modified":"2013-09-11T09:11:32","modified_gmt":"2013-09-11T07:11:32","slug":"4-wheels-and-an-engine-please-buying-a-car-in-the-holy-land","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mehmehs.com\/aliyah\/4-wheels-and-an-engine-please-buying-a-car-in-the-holy-land\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8220;4 wheels and an engine please&#8221;  (Buying a car in the holy land)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It has never occured to me to buy a new\u00a0car.\u00a0 Being the daughter of a mechanic, second hand cars were the only option ever\u00a0on the cards.\u00a0 In our family, the rule was a new car had to be at least half as old as you.\u00a0 So naturally as a new olah, where we are trying to make savings, we didn&#8217;t even consider buying new.<\/p>\n<p>So off we trot into the world of second hand cars.\u00a0 Trust me, if this is a minefield in England, it&#8217;s 10x worse here. We are basically the foreigners just off the boat.\u00a0 I mean, what are the chances of\u00a0somebody <em>not <\/em>taking advantage of us???? We might as well walk around with a sign on our heads saying &#8220;PLEASE SELL US A LEMON&#8221;.\u00a0 Anyhow, Husband went along to the dealers and was quoted a price, not so far below the price of a new car, for a car with 80,000km on the clock.\u00a0 Makes no sense.\u00a0 As new olim, we have been kindly given some money towards the purchase of a car, plus a discount on the tax\u00a0which only applies to new cars, it actually makes more sense to buy new.<\/p>\n<p>So for the first time in my life, I will be the proud (co-) owner of a shiny new sky blue Mazda 3.\u00a0 Not that it will remain shiny for long.\u00a0 The dust in this country causes most cars to look like desert jeeps after about 5 minutes.\u00a0 It seems Israelis would prefer to spend their weekends at the beach rather than polishing their cars (I actually sympathise with this\u00a0mentality &#8211; who wants to work all week with nothing but polishing your car to look forward to??)\u00a0so\u00a0seeing anything that gleams is a rare sight.\u00a0 It seems Mazdas are the affordable and popular choice in this country, and the easiest to maintain.\u00a0 Owning a BMW (even an old one) is a huge status symbol and they are almost impossible to source (much to Husbands disappointment), you see very few &#8220;novelty&#8221; or sports cars,\u00a0and the reams of Mercedes once ubiquitous in this country seem to have all but disappeared.\u00a0 Round here its Mazdas, Hyundais, a few Kias, some american cars and a sprinkling of VW&#8217;s.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/mehmehs.com\/aliyah\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/IMG_5988.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-403 alignleft lazyload\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 300px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 300\/225;border: 5px solid black;\" title=\"Mazda MX2\" data-src=\"http:\/\/mehmehs.com\/aliyah\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/IMG_5988-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/mehmehs.com\/aliyah\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/IMG_5988-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/mehmehs.com\/aliyah\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/IMG_5988.jpg 800w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" \/><\/a>We spent some time in the showroom\u00a0 as like everything else here it\u00a0seems the process of purchasing a\u00a0car\u00a0here is very different, as is buying insurance and all the rest of it&#8230; plus Jojo wanted to check out all the available\u00a0models.\u00a0 Funnily enough, Husband was concerned that Jojo would be bored &#8211; what a hilarious notion! Never seen him so happy.\u00a0 After all he is a small boy in a room full of shiny new cars&#8230;\u00a0 &#8220;Car! Car! Car!&#8221; \u00a0At one point I actually told the salesman they should open a all boys gan (nursery), they would make a fortune and they wouldn&#8217;t have to do anything.\u00a0 Jojo was rather keen on the sports model as you can see\u00a0(see picture on the left).<\/p>\n<p>&#8230;but we explained that if we purchased that one we would have to leave him at home whenever we went anywhere.\u00a0 Anyway, he insisted on checking\u00a0our chosen\u00a0car over thoroughly&#8230;. as you can see&#8230;.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/mehmehs.com\/aliyah\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/IMG_5998.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-402 alignleft lazyload\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 300px;
