On cottage cheese and other recent phenomena

4 September 2011

[This blog is dedicated to my niece, Talia, who stayed with us for 5 weeks and who we are now starting to miss] Well the cottage cheese prices went down but that hasn’t stopped the protests. We haven’t joined them as our rent hasn’t gone up, but it’s still unebelievably expensive to live in this …

The sun shone too bright it was too hot to play so we sat in our house on that hot humid day I sat there with Jojo and Roni and his toy flute and I said , how i wish we had something else cute It’s too hot to go out too humid to walk …

Demonstrations, Frolicking in the Kinneret and a few musings

Demonstrations, Frolicking in the Kinneret and a few musings

17 August 2011

In case anyone has been living in a cave recently [or like me can go months without picking up a paper when life gets busy] the country is in uproar at the moment – lots of people considered to be “my generation” are setting up Tent Cities all over the country. There are lots of …

LunaGal; Home to Israel’s hairiest men

9 August 2011

In a rather desperate bid to keep everyone amused last Friday, we decided to take a tiyul to the LunaGal, Tiveria with kids and 12 year old niece in tow. It’s a beautiful drive – round the kinneret, magical glinting sunlight. Everything there except Jesus, really. Anyway we knew it would be expensive but chalked …

In case anyone was wondering why it’s been so quiet on here, don’t worry, it’s just been a busy few weeks. Husband jetted off to France for 2 weeks, leaving us to fend for ourselves. Luckily Israelis are very understanding about Absent Husbands, what with 12.5 percent of the population doing miluim [reserve duty] at …

Magical Scenes: A wedding in the desert and a secret Spring

Magical Scenes: A wedding in the desert and a secret Spring

4 June 2011

One of Husbands cousins is currently setting up home in the desert, so he thought he would have the wedding to match. It was definitely the most unique chupa I had ever seen. The wedding took place on a tiny farm, in the Ya’ar Lehav [Lehav Forest] near Beersheva, and to get to the chupah …

Eating for cheap in the North of Israel

Eating for cheap in the North of Israel

29 May 2011

When I was a lass I distinctly remember my dad telling us of the good old days at the shukhakarmel [we are only talking 10 – 15 years ago] where you could get whatever was in season for a “shekel kilo!”. I pictured us living here, drowning in tomatoes 4 months a year, living off fruit …

Happy Birthday Israel!

Happy Birthday Israel!

15 May 2011

Israel is looking pretty good for 63, I have to say. As they say about the Queen, there is life in the old bird yet. Karmiel had a load of celebrations going on but I didn’t make it to any of them. The tekes [ceremony] and party on the eve of the chag started long …

3 May 2011

As you can see, the latest uninvited guest to our home has twice as many legs as the usual ones….. I think she’s quite sweet but friends of ours who have met her have screamed and run away in horror.  I suppose she could be poisonous but thankfully we will never know as she had …

My Story

This is the story of one family’s aliyah in 2010 to the North of Israel from just North of London, beginning 26th July 2010. At the time we were a family of 3, our delightful toddling little boy was 18 months and we were expecting a new baby just 7.5 weeks later.

In 2017 we are now a family of 7, after 4 boys we were blessed with a daughter. We invite you to join the trials, tribulations and (possibly) triumphs of emigrating to the holiest, and craziest country in the world, Israel.

Sadly, in 2020, just before the pandemic hit, the family became a family of 6 when the author, Deganit, passed away, suddenly and unexpectedly, age 40.
