On Mums and Moving with the Times

On Mums and Moving with the Times

26 January 2012

So I was having my nightly 5 minutes relaxation with the newspaper and a hot choc when husband asks if my letter to the Jpost had been printed. I had clean forgotten I even wrote it, a mere 2 days ago. [I swear I had a good memory before I had kids]. Anyway he opened …

Women’s empowerment

Women’s empowerment

23 January 2012

(This letter appears in The Jerusalem Post – 25 January.) Sir, – It’s interesting how Tova Ben-Dov, the new president of WIZO, develops her argument for women’s lib (“Women should be driving the bus!,” Comment & Features, January 22). She seems to view staying at home with small children as a punishment. Funny, that. I …

Winter is truly here, and its actually quite cold for Israel. Our mould continues to grow. All our bedrooms have black walls, our furniture is destroyed and the place stinks. Its now even turning up downstairs, creeping through the corners. Mould is not considered a health hazard here apparently so their aint nowt we can …

Chanukah. Season of Mists and Crembos.

Chanukah. Season of Mists and Crembos.

30 December 2011

Chanukah is a special time out here, of course the communal candle lighting is fun and the latkes and the parties but to be honest the best thing has to be the Crembos. For the uninitiated, a crembo is the traditional Israeli “seasonal” treat, a combination between a marshmallow and a chocolate biscuit, yet not …

Greetings from the Broom Cupboard

Greetings from the Broom Cupboard

20 December 2011

It has been a very difficult 2 weeks, probably the most challenging since our aliyah. After spending a freezing cold shabbat [even more freezing than normal in this damp, godforsaken house] with a headache that actually got worse after a shabbat shluff … I was feeling so dreadfully ill that Husband called a doctor to …

Work Life Balance??? Hmph. Not in the promised land mate.

Work Life Balance??? Hmph. Not in the promised land mate.

I remember thinking before I made aliyah how Israel is consistently 10 years behind on pretty much everything. I still think that, except, perhaps, some extremely important medical discoveries and the odd bit of technology, which is totally useless because it never filters down to the average israelis life, but I digress… still they say …

On holidays and hotels. An insight into Israeli holidays, as an Israeli.

On holidays and hotels. An insight into Israeli holidays, as an Israeli.

30 October 2011

Well it looks as if Eilat is our holiday for the next 15 years, since lets face it, no other affordable city is an appealing option. Well maybe Dubai. I suppose it’s all in the choice of passport. I quite fancied the dead sea but was somewhat put off after a bad contact lens incident …

Vaccines, what we should all know

Vaccines, what we should all know

3 October 2011

When I was in my twenties, and spent many a night out partying at fundraisers for Magen David Adom, I never imagined it would be my kid sitting in the back of one of those donated ambulances. I supported those events wholeheartedly, partly because I always thought a [as a fundraiser myself] that a houseparty …

A land flowing with Milk and [outrageously expensive] Honey

A land flowing with Milk and [outrageously expensive] Honey

26 September 2011

The Jpost claims that most Israelis do not celebrate Rosh Hashanah because they don’t really know what to do. With no agricultural significance, and lacking the intense holiness of Yom Kippur, Rosh Hashanah is the festival that gets short shrift. That doesnt stop the country buying it’s weight in honey though. So apparently we Israelis …

Yaroni Turns One

Yaroni Turns One

17 September 2011

Somehow a year since the world’s most uncomfortable ride to Tsfat hospital has passed, and the baby is now 1. So we decided to throw him a birthday party. In true Israeli style we politely waited til the last minute to invite half our guests and prepared a pile of pashtidot [hebrew for quiche-type food] …

My Story

This is the story of one family’s aliyah in 2010 to the North of Israel from just North of London, beginning 26th July 2010. At the time we were a family of 3, our delightful toddling little boy was 18 months and we were expecting a new baby just 7.5 weeks later.

In 2017 we are now a family of 7, after 4 boys we were blessed with a daughter. We invite you to join the trials, tribulations and (possibly) triumphs of emigrating to the holiest, and craziest country in the world, Israel.

Sadly, in 2020, just before the pandemic hit, the family became a family of 6 when the author, Deganit, passed away, suddenly and unexpectedly, age 40.
