On Etiquette and Other Things that Perplex Olim

Husband recently returned home today commenting on how lovely it was that a colleague of his, who had left the firm, handed out little handmade goodbye gifts with personalised messages. Even for him; who never speaks at work from what I can gather. He was touched. I told him that I have had several experiences …

“Don’t you miss London?”

“Don’t you miss London?”

A friend of mine recently returned from a brief holiday in central london, which she found wonderful. I had spent some time helping her plan a trip, but never thought to recommend Covent Garden. Israelis love it, apparently. Having studied round that area for years, I suppose I just took it for granted. People often …

On Kindness and Israelis

On Kindness and Israelis

I was brought up in a community where a certain degree of etiquette was part of life. If someone invites you for a meal, you invite them back. Giving money to charities was normal, as was attending a few events. People offered to make sheva brachot, even if it meant digging up friends for a …

Epilogue on the Rat in my Kitchen Incident

Epilogue on the Rat in my Kitchen Incident

16 June 2013

For anyone that was wondering what became of The Poor Rat, we only just discovered its fate. Our landlords son (age 18) killed it. With a hammer. Can’t say I’m so bothered, he did cost me a lot of money in fruit (and olive oil).

There’s a rat in my kitchen what am I gonna do??

There’s a rat in my kitchen what am I gonna do??

Husband finally saw it. Came running out of the kitchen waving his arms and shrieking and Then I Knew. My worst suspicions confirmed. For weeks I have been trying to ignore The Signs. Rustlings. [well, perhaps its just the hamsters, or more recently Hamster. As Thing 2 is no longer with us]. Strange sounds when …

Call the Midwife – On home births in the North of Israel

Despite me praying that this baby would not roll up until I recovered from Whooping Cough (yes, I was lucky enough to get that in my last month of pregnancy, and wasn’t it fun coughing away) and we had finished moving house (lucky me again) once again I have not made it to 38 weeks. …

7 February 2013

After months and months of fighting, we have finally won our war regarding Jojo’s gan. He now gets to go home at 1pm. Not ideal, as lunch is still a little late, in my opinion, for 2 small boys but its a lot better than it was. For a brief period, after our temporary ishur …

Far and Away

Far and Away

Years ago, like most teenagers I enjoyed the romantic aspects of Far and Away (“Tell me ya like my hat Shannon!“) and I think deep down, most people have the ideal of owning their own bit of land to scratch around in, possibly with a white picket fence and a decent garden. With house prices …

Hidden Gems in the Golan

Hidden Gems in the Golan

4 November 2012

Recently a kindly aunt of Husbands offered us a free overnight stay in a zimmer up in the Golan. Since a holiday is totally out of our budget range right now, we jumped at the chance. On the way up we decided to go to the de Karina chocolate factory (been dying to go there …

Diseases of the Holy Land

Diseases of the Holy Land

30 October 2012

Before I made aliyah, I remember hearing about relatives in Israel who were suffering from terrible diseases. Things you just don’t get in the UK. Hepatitis, year long viruses, 2-week stomach bugs, and all sorts of nasty things. I remember thinking it was a bit strange, but I put it down to them being Pioneers. I …

My Story

This is the story of one family’s aliyah in 2010 to the North of Israel from just North of London, beginning 26th July 2010. At the time we were a family of 3, our delightful toddling little boy was 18 months and we were expecting a new baby just 7.5 weeks later.

In 2017 we are now a family of 7, after 4 boys we were blessed with a daughter. We invite you to join the trials, tribulations and (possibly) triumphs of emigrating to the holiest, and craziest country in the world, Israel.

Sadly, in 2020, just before the pandemic hit, the family became a family of 6 when the author, Deganit, passed away, suddenly and unexpectedly, age 40.
