Number of Cockroach Sightings:  0 Number of burekas consumed: 8 Number of houses bought: 0 (still) I finally managed to get us all to the swimming pool this morning.   The idea of being both cool and weightless at the same time was very appealing.  We walked to a beautiful pool, which was more expensive than …

Number of Cockroach Sightings: 1  (It’s on my towel! It’s on my towel! Aagghh…) So I call up clalit this morning, our healthcare provider, to make a standard appointment.  The only available languages are hebrew, arabic or russian.  I choose the hebrew option but she speaks so fast I can barely follow the next set of …

Park Paradise…

Park Paradise…

10 August 2010

This morning was beautiful and we felt bad for Jojo having to do Boring Adult Things so we took him to Park Hamishpacha, a beautiful haven just a few minutes (if not heavily pregnant) walk up the hill.  The town had a problem with local “undesirables” (translation: Arabs from nearby villages) using the park, and the …

Number of Cockroach Sightings: 3 (2 baby escapees in the flat and the other dead in the yoghurt section of Supersol) It’s not exactly rocket science.  I mean, what’s everyone’s first word here? Bamba.  Obviously. He randomly started asking for it  by name in the middle of Supersol, sounded very cute I have to say.  Husband very peed off as he …

Day 13 – Finally, I blend in.

7 August 2010

Number of Cockroach Sightings:  2, possibly 3 (two spotted by husband in semi-dark bathroom, they remain at large.  The other later smooshed to death with husbands foot, we think it could have been one of the two sighted earlier.) We had to abandon any plans of attending the “cool” shul or accepting any invites in the neighbourhood where …

Day 12 – Israeli Washing Powders and Ugly Birds

6 August 2010

Husband is complaining he is tired, poor thing.  Says he can’t sleep at night what with the stress of us being homeless, impending arrival of new baby and Jojo waking up.  (He doesn’t like sleeping in his cot here, still a bit unsettled from all the change.)  I told him the only reason I am sleeping so …

Day 11 – Pelefones. We are standing our ground.

5 August 2010

Number of Cockroach Sightings: 1 (Stabbed by Husband with knife) They say the heat will continue, and get really bad on shabbat.  We have decided to stay put, simply because we can’t imagine travelling in what has now been called “the worst heatwave since 1948”.  It’s slightly cooler before 10am, and after 6pm, but not much. …

4 August 2010

The buses here are great but I had to order a taxi this morning to make sure I got to the doctor on time.  They don’t call them taxis, or “munit” or anything normal though.  Nope – my friend informed me they are called a “special”.  Yep, you have to call up some strange man …

Day 9 – Pelefones, Russian Women and Crazy People

3 August 2010

Excuse me if this is not a long post but this hot computer is going to boil my foetus.  So after our disastrous attempt to get a decent mobile phone deal at the aliyah fair, we try a few places.  They all seem to be the same, we think there is some price-fixing going on.  …

My Story

This is the story of one family’s aliyah in 2010 to the North of Israel from just North of London, beginning 26th July 2010. At the time we were a family of 3, our delightful toddling little boy was 18 months and we were expecting a new baby just 7.5 weeks later.

In 2017 we are now a family of 7, after 4 boys we were blessed with a daughter. We invite you to join the trials, tribulations and (possibly) triumphs of emigrating to the holiest, and craziest country in the world, Israel.

Sadly, in 2020, just before the pandemic hit, the family became a family of 6 when the author, Deganit, passed away, suddenly and unexpectedly, age 40.
