“4 wheels and an engine please” (Buying a car in the holy land)

“4 wheels and an engine please” (Buying a car in the holy land)

7 October 2010

It has never occured to me to buy a new car.  Being the daughter of a mechanic, second hand cars were the only option ever on the cards.  In our family, the rule was a new car had to be at least half as old as you.  So naturally as a new olah, where we are trying …

Fruit, Veg, Fish… food shopping in the land of milk and honey.

Fruit, Veg, Fish… food shopping in the land of milk and honey.

29 September 2010

Well you would think shopping in the land chosen especially for us by the Lord himself would have everything one needs to live a healthy life.  Sadly not the case.  We have been here for weeks now and I haven’t tasted a decent tomato.  In fact I havent tasted a decent anything. I have been told …

Our Very First Succah

Our Very First Succah

25 September 2010

I once had a rabbi in Sem originally from Brooklyn who told us that the day he woke up in his balcony succah, with an icicle on his nose, was the day he decided to make aliyah.  Clearly mitzvot are designed to be done in Israel, you can’t argue with that one.  Anyhow for years our family …

Israeli Weddings. And what not to wear…

Israeli Weddings. And what not to wear…

21 September 2010

Israeli weddings are really good fun.  Unlike the english formulas, there seem to be no two weddings the same here.  And there appear to be no rules, people just do what they feel like and if it’s not your bag – tough! Little Yaron was the youngest guest at our friends wedding on sunday night.  …

Does anyone in this country know anything about babies???!

Does anyone in this country know anything about babies???!

For a country that has a relatively high birth rate, there seems to be a bit of a problem.  Nobody seems to know much about babies.  Seriously, I kid you not.  Aside from that there is an annoying lack of trust in mothers.  Apparently we are the last person on earth to know what’s best …

The Fastest Mohel in the East

The Fastest Mohel in the East

12 September 2010

The only thing that can make shul on 2nd day Rosh Hashanah even longer is when you know the service will be followed by your sons brit.  I spent 2 and a half hours trying not to think of the awful wails and terrible screams that were to follow.  We had met the mohel the day before, …

It’s a Boy! (Obviously)

It’s a Boy! (Obviously)

So after our lovely night out with friends I felt confident that they would be able to look after Jojo when I went into labour, so the following morning [friday] thats just what I did. Woke up just before 7, got everything ready, awakened Sleeping Beauty [Husband] and called a cab.  We got to Ziv …

Nesting

Nesting

2 September 2010

Apparently this is supposed to be my “nesting week.” According to my pregnancy book, many women feel a desperate urge to clean under shelves and behind cupboards and need to be restrained.  Thankfully this is convenient timing as there is a lot of work to be done on our new house.  Finally, our kitchen is unpacked …

My Story

This is the story of one family’s aliyah in 2010 to the North of Israel from just North of London, beginning 26th July 2010. At the time we were a family of 3, our delightful toddling little boy was 18 months and we were expecting a new baby just 7.5 weeks later.

In 2017 we are now a family of 7, after 4 boys we were blessed with a daughter. We invite you to join the trials, tribulations and (possibly) triumphs of emigrating to the holiest, and craziest country in the world, Israel.

Sadly, in 2020, just before the pandemic hit, the family became a family of 6 when the author, Deganit, passed away, suddenly and unexpectedly, age 40.
