‘Scuse the quiet period. MILs visiting.

17 November 2010

In case you wondered why its been a bit quiet on this blog lately, I should tell you the Mother-in-Law is visiting at the moment.  So we have had a bit of er, tidying up to do.  Hem-hem.  I mean, not that my house isn’t usually tidy but you know what I mean… So it’s …

Ye Olde English Nursery Rhymes [in hebrew]

Ye Olde English Nursery Rhymes [in hebrew]

10 November 2010

Well today was good fun, we actually had a good turnout at our first mummy group. In fact it was so well attended I didn’t have enough instruments for all the kids! The hard bit was trying to pitch it right – what songs do you sing with Israelis, Americans and Russians??? As it turns out, there are several …

What to do with the little ones… Karmiel for kids?

What to do with the little ones… Karmiel for kids?

6 November 2010

So we thought we would give the Olive Festival another go.  Thinking perhaps we had misread the advertising, we trotted off to Park Hamishpacha today for what was supposed to be a day of Kids Activities.  We thought it would be a nice place to take a walk and see street performances or whatever other …

Of Skinny Russians and Obese Americans.

People’s reactions to a newborn baby are hilarious.   Worthy of a book in itself.  Israeli women demand a closer look, sometimes a cuddle, and then make some sort of instructional comment.  The Russians, it seems have never seen a sling before.  Bizarre really as  I am sure buggies haven’t been around that long.  Today’s morning …

Notes on Culinary Experiences in Karmiel

30 October 2010

Fridays are outing days in Israel, as there is no Sunday to speak of.  It’s not quite the same as you have the added pressure of a short day and all the shabbat prep to get sorted but at the moment there’s enough time for a short kiddy activity and brunch.  We headed off with …

Yoga, Chocolate, and Music in Karmiel

Yoga, Chocolate, and Music in Karmiel

28 October 2010

Following a rather depressing few days, I decided it was high time my children experienced some positive energy.  So off I went to try out a yoga class in Karmiel.  There is a Matnas (community centre) up the road that seems to think it’s normal to charge English Country Club prices in the north of …

One of the hardest things about making aliyah, is hearing news from the old country.  There is no one who can really share your emotions and it can feel very isolating.  For this I am deeply grateful to the internet which seems to have done the jewish people a huge service in this instance. At …

Well Done Husband. We are all Very Impressed.

21 October 2010

Since we have not yet managed to purchase our car, we are still at the mercy of the Karmiel bus system.  Thankfully, its pretty good.  So long as you don’t mind random people chatting to you as if they are your Great Aunt Rose.  Today I had the pleasure of a portly bubbe  in the much …

Thursday morning at home in Karmiel, plumber comes to fix flood in kitchen, baby screaming and Jojo clambering onto table. Cleaner arrives. Plumber argues with landlady on fone. Jojo causing a new flood in the garden. Organic vegman calls 3 times for directions while I hold both kids. Arab IKEA delivery men arrive Jojo cries hysterically. Delivery men smash light. Husband arrives home to children sleeping and calm!

It’s not easy, being Green. (And Clean)

It’s not easy, being Green. (And Clean)

10 October 2010

As the title suggests, our struggle to live a vaguely responsible existence in this one-horse town (Karmiel) continues.  It seems the entire nation is united in it’s fight against environmentalism and social responsibility. Refuse a plastic bag at the makolet, for one carton of milk on the grounds of “caring for the environment”, and the shop …

My Story

This is the story of one family’s aliyah in 2010 to the North of Israel from just North of London, beginning 26th July 2010. At the time we were a family of 3, our delightful toddling little boy was 18 months and we were expecting a new baby just 7.5 weeks later.

In 2017 we are now a family of 7, after 4 boys we were blessed with a daughter. We invite you to join the trials, tribulations and (possibly) triumphs of emigrating to the holiest, and craziest country in the world, Israel.

Sadly, in 2020, just before the pandemic hit, the family became a family of 6 when the author, Deganit, passed away, suddenly and unexpectedly, age 40.
