A word on fish and more on Israeli attitudes to kids. The mind boggles.

A word on fish and more on Israeli attitudes to kids. The mind boggles.

19 December 2010

It’s hard to find fresh fish in Karmiel, we keep hearing about alleged fishmongers but have never actually found one.  The supermarket has a lot of frozen stuff but not much variety in the way of fresh. Anyway since I found out that omega-3 is the most important constituent of breastmilk (other than chocolate) I have …

Chanukah in Karmiel (We miss you Grodzinskis)

Chanukah in Karmiel (We miss you Grodzinskis)

13 December 2010

It’s the only year of my life since my Sem gap year that I have spent my winter in a country that doesn’t “do” christmas. Can’t say I miss it really. Yes it was kind of nice curling up in front of the snowman with a hot chocolate, and having a holiday without the preparations we have to make for our …

It never rains, just pours…

It never rains, just pours…

12 December 2010

If you have been following the news you might know that Israel (particularly the North) is currently receiving most of it’s annual rainfall in just one weekend.  Our house is feeling rather like Noahs Ark at the moment, but thankfully without the animals (save the cat that sought refuge in Jojo’s buggy yesterday afternoon).  The …

A fight with the receptionist

A fight with the receptionist

6 December 2010

You may remember I have mentioned the “friendly” woman who works at our local Matnas [community centre]. You know the older lady that wears ridiculously high heels, ski pant trousers and leopard print blouses. Cleavage to boot. Anyway, it seems this woman is the most unpopular woman in Karmiel. She manages to annoy literally everyone.  Last week I missed …

Speaking “badly” on the holy land?

Speaking “badly” on the holy land?

6 December 2010

Number of headlice sightings in my hair: 5 (including one FULLY GROWN adult female).  I have been wondering if I might get struck down by the Lord for speaking badly on Israel as my last few posts have been on illness, bugs and national disasters.  Indeed we are not allowed to speak badly about Israel.  The first …

Doctors & Husbands…

Doctors & Husbands…

3 December 2010

I almost died walking round the shivuk supermarket on Wednesday. I was trying to get the shopping done asap so I could go home and crawl into bed when a very sweet employee saw Yaron asking for food and invited me to feed him in their cosy office.  I was touched by this, normally would have taken up her …

Husband Hijacks Blog

Husband Hijacks Blog

1 December 2010

You may have a remember a recent post suggested I get my own blog, unfortunately for Wife, due to sickness I have hijacked hers. Yes, she has the lurgy and flees so best I keep far away! What to say, I had so much to say, but am now lost for words. I am acting …

Bugs In Israel

Bugs In Israel

30 November 2010

“Bad news.”  Husband announces. “Oh no, what now?” I say. “Something transparant just jumped out of Jojo’s hair.” “Oh god no.  Please tell me you imagined it.”  “Nope.”  And poor Jojo was promptly frogmarched to the chemists. I had heard that nits are rampant in Israel, but like most nasty illnesses, I just never thought …

Jojo’s first Israeli Girlfriend

Jojo’s first Israeli Girlfriend

24 November 2010

Her name is Shaked.  Black hair, cute smile, bright pink coat.  She’s 2 and a half.   But then he has always had a way with older women. They met in the park some weeks ago.  Her daddy befriended the Husband.  They bonded over their mutual love of beer and his choice to start work at the crack of dawn …

Getting Laggered in the Golan

Getting Laggered in the Golan

22 November 2010

For years the excuse of my husband for drinking non-hechshered wine has been “the kosher stuff is rubbish.  Can’t compare”.  Well now he no longer has an excuse.  Wine in Israel has come a long way over the last couple of decades, and it’s now possible to be a wine connoisseur and be part of the …

My Story

This is the story of one family’s aliyah in 2010 to the North of Israel from just North of London, beginning 26th July 2010. At the time we were a family of 3, our delightful toddling little boy was 18 months and we were expecting a new baby just 7.5 weeks later.

In 2017 we are now a family of 7, after 4 boys we were blessed with a daughter. We invite you to join the trials, tribulations and (possibly) triumphs of emigrating to the holiest, and craziest country in the world, Israel.

Sadly, in 2020, just before the pandemic hit, the family became a family of 6 when the author, Deganit, passed away, suddenly and unexpectedly, age 40.
