Pain – A Poem

Pain – A Poem

In commemoration of International Women’s Day, I’m publishing a poem entitled “Pain”, and written by Duggi in 2015 after a miscarriage. Pain Eight weeks and gone, not long they say Not even a face or a sex on display A slight anticipation and perhaps a few hopes Some extra vitamins plus the thought – can …

Summer Activities in the Galil

Summer Activities in the Galil

Every year, my husband is given the 3rd week of August as a holiday. Since going away is a fantastical dream, we have developed the tradition of a stay-cation. In other words, we do trips. The weather in the north is fantastic this time of year, and it’s a great place to be.  Since travelling …

Type 1 Diabetes – Dispelling The Myths

Type 1 Diabetes – Dispelling The Myths

It’s been 2 years since Raviv’s diabetes diagnosis. Usually I’m too tired to spend an evening writing a blog. Managing diabetes is challenging even for people who do have some form of support. But a recent email from a very insensitive family member made me realise that perhaps there is a reason for the lack of …

Let’s all pray online. Who’s ridiculous idea was that?

Let’s all pray online. Who’s ridiculous idea was that?

Have you ever been guilted into praying? Or worse – forced? I went to hasmonean girls school so this was a totally normal part of my life for 5 years. But since my escape from that dark prison back in 1995, i’ve come to realise how utterly weird this is. Surely prayer is both personal …

A New Addition

A New Addition

Relax. We have a 10 month old, so no new baby. Although that would be  very impressive. Instead we have a 6 week old Gecko named Devil. We promised Jojo a pet lizard for his birthday last January… but with all the busy goings on with the new baby and Raviv’s diagnosis, we didn’t have …

A Girl? You can’t be serious

A Girl? You can’t be serious

My reaction to the arrival of our first female baby was more or less the title of this blog. I actually asked the midwife to turn her round to make sure it wasnt a boy. Dead serious.  Unlike 99% of israelis (who are not known for their patience), I decided to keep it a surprise. …

Keeping it (not too) Sweet

Keeping it (not too) Sweet

It’s been a while since the last post. And it’s been an intense few months for our family. When people ask us why we made aliyah, all sorts of reasons come up (the weather, one less seder night, some distance between us and a few stressful family members, option to live on a yeshuv…the usual …

In defence of Sergeant A

In defence of Sergeant A

Last Friday night my cousins were relaxing during a normal Friday night meal. Suddenly they hear screams and my cousins husband (in his fifties) went running nextdoor unarmed to investigate. His son, an IDF soldier, ran to get his gun. Through their neighbours window they saw dead bodies, massive amounts of blood and a terrorist wielding …

What Would You Save?

What Would You Save?

Since my last post the fires in Israel have now stopped. Several local yeshuvim were evacuated on Friday, including Ya’ad, where both my boys schoolteachers live.  Thankfully nobody was hurt and amazingly no homes damaged. Thanks to the fire service being on high alert. The residents of Halamish (Neve Tzuf), down in the centre of …

There’s no Smoke Without Fire

There’s no Smoke Without Fire

I was calmly eating a baked potato with my kids yesterday afternoon when all of a sudden Jojo jumped up and yelled “mummy mummy there’s smoke,” we’re used to people burning rubbish here so I didn’t register immediately. But I soon noticed that the smoke was creeping up the cliff right up to the back …

My Story

This is the story of one family’s aliyah in 2010 to the North of Israel from just North of London, beginning 26th July 2010. At the time we were a family of 3, our delightful toddling little boy was 18 months and we were expecting a new baby just 7.5 weeks later.

In 2017 we are now a family of 7, after 4 boys we were blessed with a daughter. We invite you to join the trials, tribulations and (possibly) triumphs of emigrating to the holiest, and craziest country in the world, Israel.

Sadly, in 2020, just before the pandemic hit, the family became a family of 6 when the author, Deganit, passed away, suddenly and unexpectedly, age 40.
